Emily & Ilé’s October Wedding at the Ypsilanti Freighthouse | Ann Arbor Wedding Photographer
Some wedding days leave you with more than beautiful photographs. They leave you with a few new things to love about the world, too.
Emily and Ilé’s October 17 wedding at the Ypsilanti Freighthouse in Ypsilanti, Michigan, was one of those days. From a sunlit first look at Riverside Park to a heartfelt ceremony inside one of Ypsilanti’s most recognizable historic venues, their wedding was full of thoughtful details, genuine connection, and the kind of kindness that makes everyone around it feel a little more at ease.
As an Ann Arbor wedding photographer, I love documenting celebrations that feel distinctly like the people at their center. Emily and Ilé’s wedding was exactly that.
A First Look at Riverside Park
The October sunshine was bright and sparkling, with crisp shadows stretching across Riverside Park. It was the kind of autumn day that makes you want to spend a little longer outside.
I met Emily and Ilé at the park for their first look before the ceremony. When they finally saw each other, their joy was immediate. There was that wonderful shift from anticipating the day to actually being in it, together. They had so much to look forward to, but for a moment, they could simply enjoy seeing one another before everything else began.
After their first look, we spent some time making portraits of just the two of them. The sun peeked over their shoulders as we moved through the park, giving us beautiful backlight and a little sparkle in the October air. I wanted their photographs to feel like an extension of the day itself: relaxed, connected, and full of the small moments that make a relationship their own.
We continued with wedding party portraits and family photographs before heading to the Freighthouse for the ceremony.
The Thoughtful Details That Made Emily and Ilé’s Wedding Their Own
Emily has a rare combination of an organized mind and an artistic eye. She is calm and steady, with a lovely, glowing intelligence about her. You can see that combination in the details she chooses and the care she puts into the things that matter to her.
One of my favorite details from the entire day was something she made herself: Emily hand-sewed beaded native flora onto Ilé’s wedding suit.
It was such a personal, thoughtful touch. Throughout the day, people kept leaning in to look more closely, discovering the little details woven into the design. It was beautiful in its own right, but knowing that Emily had made it by hand for Ilé made it even more meaningful.
It was also such a fitting detail for these two. Their wedding wasn't just about creating something beautiful. It was about the thought, care, and intention behind it.
And that brings me to one of the things I loved most about getting to know them.
A Couple Who Made Everyone Feel Welcome
Emily and Ilé have different gifts that complement each other beautifully.
Emily has a peaceful steadiness about her. She is thoughtful, capable, and quietly artistic, with a way of making things feel considered without making them feel complicated.
Ilé has a wonderful ability to make people feel seen and known. He draws people into conversations, gets them interested in the things he loves, and shares his enthusiasm in a way that makes you want to learn more. He is the sort of person who can introduce you to a new subject and have you genuinely curious about it before the conversation is over.
At one point, we talked about native flowers, and Ilé kindly shared his favorite with me: Purple Joe-Pye weed.
It's a small exchange, but it's one of the things I love about photographing weddings. In between the portraits, timelines, and big moments, you get to know people through the little things they share. You leave with photographs, of course, but sometimes you leave with a new favorite flower, too.
I'll be adding Purple Joe-Pye weed to my own front-yard landscaping this fall in honor of Emily and Ilé. It's a lovely reminder of a day spent with two people whose kindness extended to everyone around them.
A Heartfelt Ceremony at the Ypsilanti Freighthouse
The Ypsilanti Freighthouse was a fitting setting for the next part of the day. With its distinctive historic character and open interior, the venue has a sense of place that feels unmistakably Ypsilanti.
As guests gathered for the ceremony, beautiful light began to filter through the side doors. It was one of those moments when the setting and the timing come together without needing much embellishment.
Emily and Ilé stood together and made their promises to one another, surrounded by the people who had come to celebrate them. Their words were moving, and the room felt wonderfully present. I focused on documenting the ceremony as it unfolded: the expressions, the people listening, and the small reactions that make a wedding meaningful beyond the main events.
Two people were choosing each other, and everyone there had the privilege of witnessing it.
For couples planning a wedding at the Ypsilanti Freighthouse, I love how a historic space like this can provide a memorable backdrop without needing to compete with the people and relationships at the heart of the celebration.
From Wedding Promises to Dancing the Night Away
After the ceremony, the celebration shifted into party mode.
The formalities gave way to conversation, laughter, karaoke and a dance floor that carried the festivities into the evening. It was lovley to see Emily and Ilé surrounded by so many people who were genuinely happy to be there for them.
And then came the sparkler exit: a bright, celebratory send-off to close out the night.
After a day that began in the October sunshine at Riverside Park and continued through heartfelt vows and a lively reception at the Ypsilanti Freighthouse, it was a fitting ending.
Emily and Ilé, thank you for letting me document such a thoughtful, joyful celebration. I'm grateful I got to know you both a little, and I hope your marriage is filled with the same curiosity, steadiness, generosity, and care that you brought to your wedding day.
I'll think of you two whenever those Purple Joe-Pye flowers bloom.
